Ophthalmologist in Tampa Accepting Insurance

We Accept Insurance

The Eye Clinic of Florida accepts most major insurances, including Medicare.

Copayments and deductibles are due at the time of your visit. We accept cash, Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express.

We offer reasonable rates for most uninsured patients.

We take some, but not all, Medicare Advantage plans. We do not accept Humana, Universal, WellCare, or Freedom plans. Many of these plans substitute glasses exams for medical and surgical specialist care. Unfortunately, their patients have very little choice in which doctors they can see.

We also do not participate with Medicaid (not to be confused with Medicare).

Some private insurance companies have begun to offer Medicare Private Fee for Service Plans, or PFFS for short. If you have a PFFS plan, then we can see you and your insurance will pay.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, call the office for more information. Some may offer you choices, but many behave as HMOs.

If you need help changing from your HMO, ask us first. We will be happy to assist you.

Medical Insurance vs Vision Insurance

Patients are often confused about the differences between medical and vision insurance.

Vision-only plans such as VSP, EyeMed, etc. are for routine vision care only. These standard check-ups are simply exams to check for new glasses or contact lens prescriptions. Patients may only access their vision plan once every one to two years. Vision-only plans are appropriate only if there are no active eye problems or a history of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, dry eyes, or macular degeneration.

Medical problems (not including visits regarding glasses or contact lens prescription) such as red eyes, decreased vision from cataracts, or eye pain is not covered by vision-only plans. Instead, they are covered by your medical insurance (i.e., Medicare, United, etc.). Follow-up visits are determined by medical necessity, not by once-a-year rules. If during your medical visit, you would like your eyes checked for glasses (refraction) as well, then the cost is only $45 for that additional service.

Contact lens fitting fees vary by the type of lens. Call the office for the most current information: (813) 538-1500.
