Dry eye is one of the most prevalent eye conditions affecting Floridians today, impacting an estimated 16 million people across the U.S. Causing stinging, burning, redness, light sensitivity, and even blurry vision, dry eye can significantly impact your quality of life.

As a complex, often underdiagnosed condition involving the eye’s natural tear production, dry eye has several possible causes in Tampa Bay, including:

Underlying Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions, including thyroid conditions, diabetes, lupus, and Sjögren syndrome, may cause dry eye. Some medications can also trigger this eye condition, including medications used to treat allergies, high blood pressure, and depression.

Aging

The natural aging process is the most common cause of dry eye for adults in Tampa and across the U.S. Aging diminishes tear production, leading to an imbalance in the eyes’ moisture levels.

Menopause

Dry eye is more prevalent in women than men and post-menopausal women are at the highest risk. Menopause causes a decrease in androgen hormone production, which can affect glands in the eyelids. These glands produce the oils required for tears.

Extended Periods of Screen Time

Looking at a computer screen for extended periods without taking breaks can lead to dry eye. Screen time can reduce blinking, leading to dryness. Given that Florida ranks fourth nationally for tech employment, Tampa patients with dry eye may need to adjust their routines to limit screen time.

Dry, Windy, or Smoky Climates

Dry, windy, or smoky environments can cause your tears to evaporate faster than usual. While the climate in Tampa Bay and throughout Florida is humid, high winds are common, especially in hurricane season. These winds can blow dust, pollution, and smoke into the tear film, compromising your tear production.

Prolonged Contact Lens Use

Contact lenses can limit the amount of oxygen that reaches the eyes. Especially if the lenses are worn for prolonged periods, they may contribute to dry eye symptoms.

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is an eye condition involving inflammation in the eyelids’ oil glands. It’s a common cause of dry eye among Tampa area patients, and it typically causes inflamed, itchy eyelids.
